Yellow submarine part II
A couple of weeks ago we promised a follow up on the cute little yellow submarine we wanted to try out in the pond.
Well the submarine is really cute but that is as far as the fun goes... I know it is a toy, the SpyCam Aqua states users from 5+ years but that doesn't mean that adults will think it's boring but this toy is. The idea is great! A remote controlled submarine that you can use to take pictures and video in the ”deep sea” can't go wrong....you think...
The spycam is easy to maneuver but the problem is that when it is approximately 70 cm from the control box it will stop working and that is when the submarine is in surface mode. Submerged it will only go to approx. 40 cm depth before it will loose contact with the remote control and the ”emergency protocol” will take it to the surface again. To the manufacturer's defence you can find a text in small print in the manual stating that you should only use the submarine in calm, clear and shallow water. (But what's the point with a submarine then..?..)
To be fair and to give a more nuanced review I let an eight year old girl and a five year old boy test the submarine to see if it was only me being a grumpy old fart. Yes I'm old and I'm grumpy but their opinion didn't differ that much from mine. (No I hadn't told them my opinion and they did test the submarine individually so they didn't know what the other thought about it.)
The girl lost interest when a really beautiful butterfly came along and the boy didn't want to play with the submarine anymore when he had tried to submerge two times and lost contact with the vessel.
Regarding the camera we took one photo and about five minutes of video before the built in memory card was full. The quality was not that good so of all the five minutes I only showed a couple of seconds in the youtube video.
Over all you can't expect that high video quality from an inexpensive toy costing approx $50 but I think that it is way too much money for this and I would rather spend $50 on a BIG bag of candy... Then the fun would have lasted longer...
